Pattern Review… Nichola's Twist Hem Scoop Neck 3 by 3 Tee

Nichola kindly agreed to write a review of her make after testing the 3 by 3 tees Pattern. Nichola received this pattern to make and review with no obligation. The opinions shared are all her own.

Hi, I’m Nichola, a PDF trained sewist! I was delighted to be asked to review the 3 by 3 Tees pattern by My Handmade Wardrobe Patterns.

I picked to make the scoop neck version with the twist hem - I've been looking at twist hem tops nervously previously and it was great to be able to finally take the plunge!

My measurements are bust 37 ins; waist 34ins; hips 41ins. Height 162cm but my torso is long compared with my legs so I didn't shorten.

I made small at shoulders / bust graded to medium at waist and hips and was happy with the fit.

The instructions were very detailed and easy to follow and the nesting of the sizes meant that grading was straight forward.  I usually adapt patterns to be able to use a projector to cut them but the format of this pattern meant that it was only possible to project the back and sleeve pieces, so I had to resort to cutting and sticking pages together, which I don't really enjoy (and it eats into valuable sewing time).

I used a custom printed 220gsm cotton spandex jersey, with good 4 way stretch with cotton lycra ribbing for the neckline which worked really well - although I can see that a fabric with more drape, would look particularly good with this option.  I made the pattern according to my measurements (small bust, graded to medium at waist and hips) and the drafting was clearly accurate as the fit was just right on my first attempt.

The twist hem gives a shorter hem at the front so, with short sleeves, would make a great summer top.  I am planning a long sleeve version for winter layering and will probably choose the v-neck option with that for variety.  There's enough ease in the top that I'm sure it would work well with a lightweight sweater knit too.  The number of options included is great and I'm sure I'm going to sew all of them in time!
