How to… add a patch pocket

Adding a patch pocket is a simple way to add a personal touch to any style. I have personalised the A-line Skirt from our All The Cute Skirts pattern with a patch pocket.

I made the mini length version in a lovely soft raspberry pink babycord. I added little patch pockets to the front which look super-cute on this short version, but would work equally well with the knee length too.

These pockets are really simple shape so you could easily draft these yourself. Make sure they will fit your hand in, plus seam allowance! I cut mine 15cm across by 22cm deep with a point at the bottom. this includes a 1cm seam allowance at the side and bottom edges. I added 3.5 cm at the top so I could turn the opening edge 1.5cm and then another 2cm for a neat finish.

I pressed the side and bottom edges in and then pressed the top opening hem and top stitched with 2 rows of stitching before attaching the pocket. I pinned all around the pocket with the pins placing them perpendicular to the edge to hold the pocket down securely. I then stitched close to the edge to secure the pocket in place, back stitching at the top. You could add a little reinforcing triangle stitch or a bar tack here if you know the pockets will be used heavily.

I’m wearing my skirt with the crew neck ‘3 by 3 tees’ pattern, made out of a gorgeous rose print viscose jersey. This is such a classic combination for casual autumn dressing. I’ll throw on a cardigan over the top and I am ready to go!

This fabric has quite a bit of elastane content giving it a good degree of stretch and this could stretch out over time with wear making the waistline a bit baggy. So, I decided to add a more stable woven cotton facing (in a cute flamingo print!), which l backed with iron-on cotton woven interfacing.

This interfacing fuses well with cotton fabrics giving them stability and strength without the crispiness you can get with some other non-woven interfacings. Find out more about how to choose the right interfacing for your projects.

I also swapped out the regular zip for a concealed zip for a really smooth silhouette. Tkae a look at my ultimate concealed zip tutorial.
