How to… Backstitch when using a stretch stitch

The stretch stitch on most modern sewing machines, is self locking, but sometimes you need a bit more security at the end of a seam on your jersey makes.

Because stretch stitch (the stitch that looks a bit like a lightening bolt) on the sewing machine, is self locking, most machines won’t allow you to back stitch at the end. When you press the backstitch button, they will simply stitch in the same place which unfortunately can cause holes on thinner fabrics.

Normally it's fine to just leave the stitching un-secured, but sometimes you might need a bit of extra security, for instance if creating side seam vents or in the case of the 3 by 3 Tees, when making versions which include the v-neck, twist hem or tie hem.

We created this video to help you learn how to backstitch when using a stretch stitch. We hope this video gives you confidence to secure your stretch stitches!
