3 by 3 Tees Variations
I initially designed a Simple Tee pattern as a solution to a problem – I needed a simple, easy to sew pattern to help new sewists conquer their fear of sewing jersey. The original simple tee pattern included several essential jersey sewing techniques, like stretching on a neckband and hemming jersey fabric, plus some nice design features like the curved hem and flattering, body-skimming fit. We used this pattern for many years in our workshops and pretty much everyone who made one went on to make more!
We decided to use this Simple Tee as a base and add lots of fun design variations for you to try. With over 27 possible combos, which will you choose?
Let’s take it from the top…
-
The Crew Neck is a neat high neck. The neckband piece includes lots of notches to help you match up and stretch on the neckband neatly. We’d recommend this neckline for beginners.
-
The Scoop Neck is a wider more scooped variation. The neckband can be made in a contrast fabric but always try to make sure all fabrics combined have the same stretch and return.
-
The V-neck is a little more advanced, but with our clear photo step-by-step guide, and a little practice, you’ll have no trouble creating a neat and precise finish.
-
The simple Grown-on Sleeve is just long enough to cover the shoulders whilst still looking cute and modern.
-
The addition of a cuff ramps up the modernity and can be added in a contrast fabric and applied in 2 different ways!
-
The Long Sleeve is a variation I’ve been wanting to create for a long time. And now I have, I love it! I’ll be making a full winter wardrobe of these!
-
The Curved Hem is longline and easy to wear tucked in or over your jeans - or with our recently launched wrap skirt pattern.
-
The Tie Hem is a cute, fun variation. After a number of RTW tie-front tee fails (too short, too tight, too loose, too floppy) we’ve made sure the t-shirt front is still plenty long enough to avoid any tummy flashing and the ties are substantial enough to be tied loosely or tighter and not look like droopy dog ears whichever way you choose to wear it.
-
The Twist Hem is a nod to a trend we just had to include. This variation is designed to be worn a little tighter (so you may wish to size down, rather than up) and it suits fabrics with some weight and substance like polyester peachskin jersey, ponti roma and cotton elastane jersey. It looks really cool styled with high waisted jeans.
